DWU volleyball breezes past Mount Marty

Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball ended its recent losing skid on Thursday night against Mount Marty at the Corn Palace with a three-set victory.

The Tigers took down the Lancers 25-19, 25-15 and 25-14 for their first Great Plains Athletic Conference win of the season.

With the match tied at 8-8 in the first set, the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to pull away from Mount Marty. DWU used its first-set momentum to jump out to a 13-5 lead to start the second set and eventually won six of the final seven points to win the set. DWU’s third-set victory was highlighted by a 10-3 run to end the match.

Winner native Sydney Fritz had a match-high 11 kills, with all of them coming in the first two sets of the match. Meanwhile Rebecca Frick added seven kills and nine digs. Wagner native Emily Brunsing pitched in six kills for DWU.

The Tiger defense held Mount Marty to a season-low .021 kill percentage and came up with 35 digs. Sara Herman and Bridgett Knobbe each had six digs, with the latter also dishing out 23 assists.

Brooke Bennett had a match-high 11 digs in defeat for Mount Marty (2-8, 0-5 GPAC).

Dakota Wesleyan (11-3, 1-2 GPAC) hosts No. 2 Dordt College on Saturday at the Corn Palace.
