It wasn't a perfect performance from the Mitchell High School volleyball team, but it got the job done on Tuesday.

The Kernels (5-1, 2-0 ESD) took down Brandon Valley in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game 3-1, with set scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-14, 25-23.

"I think we did great," Mitchell senior Chelsea Brewster said. "It was very up and down, but we did a great job coming back in the end."

Brewster led the Kernels with 20 kills and 16 digs. Mandy Schmidt (13 digs), Bridget Thill (12) and Brooke Flemmer (10) all had double-digit digs, as well.

Mitchell opened the match with a 10-8 advantage, then it went on a 10-3 run to take a commanding 20-11 lead. Like the Lynx did most of the night, they tried to stage a comeback and didn't let the Kernels run away with the set. Brandon Valley rallied to make it 24-21 before Mitchell won the game-winning point coming out of a timeout.

Mitchell kept the momentum to start the second set, winning the first three points. It looked like it would take a two-set lead with a 19-16 advantage.

Things then unraveled, as two Mitchell timeouts couldn't fix the Kernels' cold spell. The Lynx won nine straight points to take the set.

"We had some errors and we let them back in," MHS head coach Deb Thill said. "They gained that momentum, however, I thought it fueled our fire a little bit because we played really well in that third set."

The Kernels adjusted their serving and offense to get back on track in the third set. Mitchell took a 10-3 lead and extended its lead to as many as 11 points, eventually winning 25-14.

Bridget Thill and Flemmer led the team with three aces each, while Maggie Kattner added two aces.

Brandon Valley continued to hang around, makinging a comeback effort in the fourth set after starting down 9-3. The Lynx took a 23-22 lead, forcing Mitchell to score the final three points to take the match.

"A win is a win," Thill said. "You have to give Brandon (Valley) credit, its very much improved from a year ago, and its very much improved from when we played it in the Huron tournament."

The Kernels host Yankton at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
