KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Bronson Burgoon is about to find out what playing in front is all about on the PGA Tour.

Burgoon claimed the opening-round lead at the CIMB Classic on Thursday, firing a 63 to grab a one-shot lead over Austin Cook.

Burgoon, who is 9-under par, started on the back nine and played the final 14 holes of his round at 10 under in his first career appearance at the CIMB Classic.

The highlight of his round was a chip-in for eagle on his ninth hole (18th).

Burgoon's best career round was a 62 at the John Deere Classic.

On Thursday, he hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation, tied for the best in the tournament field.

Scott Piercy, Billy Horschel and Taiwan's C.T. Pan are tied for third at 7 under.

Justin Thomas, who won the event in 2015 and 2016, opened his bid to become the only player in CIMB Classic history to win the event three times with a 6-under 66. Thomas is in an eight-way tie for sixth entering the second round.
